The tomb of Jakob Ihrler in Kelheim

Jacobus (Jakob) Ihrler (born  August 16, 1791 in Dietfurt an der Altmühl , †  August 15, 1852 in Kelheim ) was a master stonemason and quarry owner . He is the namesake of the Ihrlerstein community , which was formed in 1934 from Neukelheim, Walddorf, Kleinwalddorf, Sausthal , Osterthal and Palmberg.

Life

Ihrler took over his stepfather's Kelheim stonemason business in 1822 and supplied the stones for the construction of the Ludwigsbrücke in Munich , which made him famous beyond Kelheim. In 1825 he opened another quarry in Ihrlerstein , which turned out to be a real gold mine for him and the region. Ihrler became the most important entrepreneur in the Kelheim district and at times employed over 200 workers. The Ihrlerstein green sandstone and the limestone beneath it became known far beyond Bavaria through Ihrler. The sandstone was used a. a. for the construction of the Alte Pinakothek , for the Glyptothek and the Residenz in Munich and for the Liberation Hall in Kelheim .

He was unable to fulfill a vow to build a church, but his son-in-law Carl Anton Lang did for him after his death. He built the Jakobskirche in the later Ihrlerstein from 1860 to 1873, which is still there today.
