Jakob Rosenberg (art historian)

Jakob Rosenberg (born September 5, 1893 in Berlin ; † April 7, 1980 in Cambridge , MA ) was an art historian of German - Jewish origin and a specialist in Dutch hand drawings, graphics and paintings.

Life

Jacob Rosenberg came from an art dealer family, a brother was the art dealer Saemy Rosenberg (1893-1971), in 1935 the consortium for the sale of Guelph treasure belonged., Three other brothers were also active in the art trade.

From 1912 to 1914 he did an internship in the art trade in Munich. In the First World War Rosenberg soldier was and fell in 1915 in British captivity and passed through a prisoner exchange in Switzerland. From 1919 he studied art history, first in Bern and Zurich, then in Frankfurt and Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1922 under Heinrich Wölfflin . From 1923 he worked at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin under Max J. Friedländer , initially as an unpaid research assistant, from 1935 as a curator . In 1935 he was dismissed for racial reasons after the frontline fighter privilege had expired .

After a first stay at Harvard in 1936, Jakob Rosenberg emigrated to the USA in 1937, where he found accommodation at Harvard University through the mediation of Adolph Goldschmidt and his friend Paul J. Sachs . There he became a Research Fellow and Lecturer, Associate Professor in 1940 and Professor in 1947. In 1964 he retired. At the same time, from 1939 he was head of the graphic collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

In 1954 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Jacob Rosenberg was married to Elisabeth Husserl (1892–1981), Edmund Husserl's daughter, since 1922 .
