Jakob Sommer (born February 23, 1893 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † March 10, 1955 in Mannheim ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

After elementary school in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Sommer completed an apprenticeship as an iron lathe operator with Hutchinson in Mannheim and then worked in this profession in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen am Rhein and Frankfurt am Main. From 1922 on he was chairman of the works council at the BASF plant in Oppau. In 1928 he became party secretary of the SPD in Mannheim. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he was held in custody in 1933/34 and was then unemployed for political reasons. From 1937 he was employed by Heinrich Lanz AG and after the Second World War he became managing director of the Mannheim AOK in 1947 . Sommer was married to Marie Müller (1893–1940) and had two children.

The grave in the main cemetery in Mannheim consists of a tall, narrow limestone stele on a small sarcophagus-like base.

In 1917, Sommer became a member of the SPD before he switched to the USPD in 1920 and became party chairman in Ludwigshafen. Two years later he went back to the SPD and was then SPD chairman in Ludwigshafen until 1928. He was also a city ​​councilor from 1925 to 1930 . In 1933 he became a member of the state parliament of the Republic of Baden . In 1945, Sommer was appointed to the advisory board of Mayor Josef Braun in Mannheim . From 1946 until his death in 1955 he was a member of the Mannheim municipal council and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there.
