Handwriting of the Austrian Chronicle

Jakob Unrest (* around 1430 in Bavaria or Carinthia ; † 1500 probably in St. Martin am Techelsberg ) was an important chronicler of the Austrian and Hungarian history of the late Middle Ages .

Life

There is evidence that Jakob Unrest was a pastor in St. Martin am Techelsberg between 1466 and 1500 (today part of the Techelsberg am Wörther See community ), and around 1470 he is also said to have worked as a canon in Maria Saal . It is believed that he studied in Vienna and established relationships with humanist circles there, from which he later obtained his information.

He wrote chronicles on Austria and Hungary as well as a regional chronicle of Carinthia. Unlike other historians of the Middle Ages such as Johann von Viktring , he wrote in German. The most detailed of his works is the Austrian Chronicle, it begins with the description of the development of the Albertine and Leopoldine line of the Habsburgs since 1379 ( Treaty of Neuberg ), describes in detail the career of Emperor Friedrich III. and ends in 1499. In the description of the history of the Habsburg countries, the events in Carinthia are particularly discussed, including the five Turkish invasions between 1473 and 1483, the Hungarian occupation (1480–90) and the associated peasant uprisings and the Carinthian farmers' union. Unrest also goes into the events at the imperial level as well as the Turkish, Italian and Burgundian conditions in his time.

Unrest described the social conditions at the end of the 15th century, criticized the weaknesses of Emperor Frederick III, in particular the failure of the secular and spiritual leaders of the country to face the enemy, and saw both the failure of the peasant uprising and the Turkish invasions as a just punishment from God. In contrast, he showed himself to be benevolent in his writings, both to Frederick's opponent, the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus , and to his successor Maximilian I.
