Jakob Wohlschläger also Wohlschlägel (born July 23, 1869 in Stockerau , † November 14, 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and Christian social politician .

Life

The illegitimate son of a day laborer graduated from the Vienna State Trade School (Werkmeisterschule) in 1890 , worked as a construction technician from around 1895 and as a freelance architect in Vienna from 1899. Between 1904 and 1929 he worked as a building contractor and built numerous apartment buildings before 1914. A commercial rise and his honors were linked to Wohlschläger's commitment at Karl Lueger's side . In connection with Lueger's concern to protect small businesses from (Jewish) big capital, Wohlschläger founded the company "Wiener Warenmuster- und Kollektivkaufhaus Jakob Wohlschläger", which had the "Mariahilfer Zentralpalast" (later Stafa department store ) built. The distinctive building was intended for exhibitions and sales purposes for small businesses in order to compete against the emerging large department stores. The company was unsuccessful, however, and soon went bankrupt.

Wohlschläger was temporarily a member of the Vienna City Council and became Imperial Councilor in 1908. The municipality of Vienna dedicated an honorary grave to him in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
