Jale İnan

Jale İnan (born February 1, 1914 in Istanbul ; † February 26, 2001 there ) was a Turkish classical archaeologist . She taught as a professor of classical archeology at Istanbul University .

Jale İnan was the daughter of Aziz Ogan , who was responsible for the antiquities of the Izmir district from 1918 and regularly received archaeologists as guests, including Theodor Wiegand and Gerhart Rodenwaldt . Ogan became director of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum in 1931 . In 1934 İnan enrolled to study medicine in Istanbul, as there was no chair for archeology in Turkey. When she received a Germany Scholarship, she moved to Berlin and Munich in 1935, where she studied Classical Archeology and received her doctorate from Rodenwaldt in March 1943 with a thesis on the History of Sacrifice on Roman Coins . In 1943 she traveled back to Turkey to take up the position of assistant at the Chair of Ancient History and Numismatics at Istanbul University . In 1944 she married the civil engineer Mustafa İnan, later a professor at the Istanbul Technical University . In 1947 she became an assistant to Arif Müfid Mansel , the first Turkish professor for classical archeology.

İnan completed her habilitation in 1953 and became a professor in 1963; In 1975 she succeeded Mansel on the chair. She spent several stays abroad at the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin and Rome and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , USA. Her field research in Perge and Side was fundamental to the development of archeology and monument preservation in Turkey.
