Wolfgang Radt

Wolfgang Radt (born January 25, 1940 in Guben ) is a German classical archaeologist .

From 1959 to 1968 Wolfgang Radt studied Classical Archeology , Prehistory and Early History , Art History , Near Eastern Archeology and Classical Philology at the Universities of Frankfurt and Munich . During this time (between 1961 and 1966) he took part in excavations in Manching , Milet and Priene . In 1968 he received his doctorate in Frankfurt on the subject of "Settlements and Buildings on the Halicarnassus Peninsula". He then took part in the excavations of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Norsun Tepe in Eastern Turkey until 1969 and worked in the editorial team of the Roman-Germanic Commission in Frankfurt am Main . This was followed by a DAI travel grant through the Mediterranean and the Middle East until 1970 .

From 1971 until his retirement in 2005, Radt worked at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute, initially as a research assistant for Classical Archeology. His successor was Felix Pirson . In 1972 he was given responsibility for the excavations in Pergamon . Two years later, Radt became a full member of the DAI. In 1982 he was appointed Scientific Director (2nd Director) of the Istanbul Department. Since 1991 Radt has also been a member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute . In 2001 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Münster , two years later an honorary member of the Turkish Institute for Classical Studies .
