James Arthur Abbott (born September 7, 1892 in Patricroft , † December 1952 in Barton-upon-Irwell ) was an English football player .

Career

Abbott played for the school team in Barton-upon-Irwell and at the age of 14 for Barton Albion in the Manchester Amateur League , where he is said to have achieved an average of two goals per game over four years. Shortly after the start of the 1912/13 season, he joined Eccles Borough in the Lancashire Combination and won the league championship with the club. For the 1913/14 season Abbott moved to Manchester City in the Football League First Division together with the brothers Albert and Peter Fairclough , who had scored 71 goals in the championship season for Eccles Borough (29 from Abbott) .

There he made his debut after a few appearances in the reserve team shortly after his 19th birthday on September 13, 1913 in a 3-1 away win against Sheffield United in the right half-forward position and contributed to the success with one goal. He was also in the squad the following week against Derby County , despite another Abbott goal, the team lost 2-1. Abbott also formed the right attacking side with Sid Hoad a week later in a 3-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur , but George Wynn and Harry Taylor were preferred as the season progressed. In late January 1915, Abbott was suspended from Manchester City for an indefinite period of misconduct; until April 1915 he is said to have belonged to the club.

In February 1916 Abbott had an appearance for Portsmouth FC against the Bristol Rovers (final score 3-0) in the South-Western Combination , a war-related replacement competition. Abbott had already entered the army in March 1915 and served with the South Wales Borderers , in December 1917 he was honorably discharged from the army because he "no longer had the physical fitness for military service". In the early 1920s he appeared as a crown green bowls player (a variant of bowls ) and took part in several major tournaments.
