James George Alexander Bannerman Carnegie, 3rd Duke of Fife (born September 23, 1929 in London - † June 22, 2015 ) was the great-grandson of King Edward VII, a member of the rest of the British royal family and was one of the peers as the Duke of Fife .

Life

Carnegie was the only child of Charles Alexander Carnegie, 11th Earl of Southesk (1893–1992), and his wife Lady Maud Duff, Countess of Southesk (1893–1945), the younger daughter of Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife , and Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife . He attended Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland and then the Royal Agricultural College , Cirencester . During his army service he served with the Scots Guards from 1948 to 1950 in Malaya . Since the 1960s he was a member of the British Olympic Association .

On September 11, 1956, he married in Perth , Scotland The Honorable Caroline Cecily Dewar (born February 12, 1934 at Bardowie Castle, Milngavie ), daughter of Henry Evelyn Alexander Dewar, 3rd Baron Forteviot, and Cynthia Monica Starkie. The marriage, which was divorced in 1966, had three children:

  • Stillbirth of a boy (* / † April 4, 1958)
  • Alexandra Claire (born June 20, 1959) ⚭ 2001 Mark Fleming Etherington
  • David Charles, 4th Duke of Fife (born March 3, 1961) ⚭ 1987 Caroline Anne Bunting

After the death of his aunt Alexandra Duff, 2nd Duchess of Fife , he inherited her title in 1959. This had carried the dignity in its own right, because the corresponding award to her father had been made with the express note that the title could also pass to his daughters and their male descendants in the absence of male heirs. Carnegie's mother had passed away by this point. In 1992, after the death of his father, Carnegie also inherited his father's title. The earl dignity has since been a subordinate title of the respective duke and is worn as a courtesy title by the title heir. The duke's residence was Elsick House near Stonehaven in Kincardineshire .
