James Cecil, 5th Earl of Salisbury ( June 8, 1691 - October 9, 1728 ) was a British politician and peer .

Cecil was the only child of James Cecil, 4th Earl of Salisbury and Frances Benett, daughter of Simon Bennet. He was only four years old when, on the death of his father, he inherited his titles as Earl of Salisbury , Viscount Cranborne and Baron Cecil . 1707 he graduated from the Christ Church College of Oxford University as a Master of Arts from.

Between 1712 and 1714 he succeeded William Cowper, 1st Baron Cowper , Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire . Cowper then succeeded him again in this office.

He married Lady Anne Tufton on February 12, 1709, second daughter and partial heir of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet . With her he had seven children:

When he died in 1728, his eldest son James inherited his titles of nobility. His widow died in 1756. Around 1732 she founded the Countess Anne School in Hatfield, named after her .
