James Craig Nicoll

James Craig Nicoll (* 22. November 1847 , † 1918 in Norwalk, Connecticut) was an American landscape and marine painter and etcher .

Nicoll was born in 1847 to John Williams Nicoll and his wife Elizabeth Craig Nicoll. He went to Quackenbos School and later moved to New York City , where he was a student of the Dutch-American painter Mauritz de Haas and focused primarily on coastal scenes from the New England coast .

He exhibited his works in various cities and exhibitions, including the National Academy of Design , the Art Institute of Chicago and the Boston Art Club, as well as the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1883, the Paris Exposition in 1889 and the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. He was honored with medals from the American Artist's Association, the New Orleans Exposition and the Atlanta Expo, among others. Nicoll was elected Associate ( ANA ) of the National Academy of Design in 1880, and in 1885 he became a full member ( NA ). He also founded the American Watercolor Society , where he was secretary for ten years and president until his death in 1918. He was also a member and president of the Artists' Fund Society and numerous other societies.

One of his best known works is Squally Weather , owned by the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, as well as other marine and landscape paintings such as On the Gulf of St. Lawrence , Off Portland Harbor, and Stormy Day at Block Island . His works are also on display at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
