Life and work

Mauritz de Haas was the youngest of Jan and Marie Petronella de Haas' five children. His siblings were Jan, a ship engineer in the Dutch Navy, Jacques, violinist and composer, William F., landscape painter, and Marie Petronella and Mauritz. Already at an early age he showed an interest in seafaring and after the early death of his father received painting lessons from Louis Meijer , a well-known marine painter.

Education and early years

De Haas completed his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague . He was a student of Johannes Bosboom . Following his studies, he spent a year in London from 1851 to 1852 , where he studied contemporary English watercolor painting .

De Haas concentrated on marine painting early on. He found the motifs for his paintings during his numerous trips to and along the coast and on ships: During his time in London, for example, to the English Channel, to the north coast of England and Scotland, as well as to the French Atlantic coast and the island of Jersey. In 1858 he also took part in a trip with the British frigate Evertsen to the American east coast.

In 1856 the Dutch Queen Sophie von Württemberg (1818–1877) bought the painting Dutch fishing Boats by de Haas, and a year later he was appointed painter for the Dutch Navy . In 1859 he married the young Englishwoman Catharine A. Millar and had three children with her - Marie Petronella, Willemina F. and Mauritz Frederick Hendrick Junior, who also became a painter.

Moved to the United States of America

At the suggestion of the American chargé d'affaires in The Hague, August Belmont , moved de Haas 1859 in the United States to New York City to and remained there until his death. After moving, he rented a studio in New York and quickly established himself. He quickly became a well-known painter and received important commissions. During the Civil War he painted several ship scenes for Admiral David Glasgow Farragut . In 1862 he was elected an associate member ( ANA ) of the National Academy Museum and School , and in 1867 a full member ( NA ). He exhibited his watercolors annually in the academy. A year earlier, in 1866, he was one of the founding members of the American Watercolor Society . Among his students was the landscape and marine painter James Craig Nicoll (1847–1918).

His paintings Farragut Passing the Forts at the Battle of New Orleans and The Rapids above Niagara were exhibited at the World's Fair in Paris in 1878 and are among the most famous of his works. Typical of his painting are the motifs scenes on the coasts and on the seas, often combined with storms or windy weather or even in moonlight. De Haas preferred to work with oil paint, but also used watercolor painting. Contemporaries praised his realistic representation of nature as well as his knowledge of shipbuilding and the oceans.

Mauritz Frederik Hendrik de Haas painted in New York until his death on November 23, 1895.
