James Gerry

James Gerry (born August 14, 1796 in Rising Sun , Cecil County , Maryland , †  July 19, 1873 in Shrewsbury , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Gerry enjoyed a good primary education and then attended West Nottingham Academy . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in Shrewsbury from 1824 in this profession. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1838 Gerry was elected in the eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania state to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Henry Logan on March 4, 1839 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1843 . The period from 1841 was fraught with tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, James Gerry practiced as a doctor again until 1870. After that, he retired. He died on July 19, 1873 in Shrewsbury, where he was also buried.
