James Joseph McCann

James Joseph McCann PC (born March 29, 1887 in Perth , Ontario , † April 11, 1961 ) was a politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons for 21 years and for several years Minister in the 16th Canadian cabinet of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and in the 17th cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent .

Life

McCann completed a degree in medicine after attending school , which he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (MD). After earning a Master of Counseling (CM) he worked as a doctor and later also received a Doctor of Law (LL.D.).

As a candidate for the Liberal Party, McCann was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in the election of October 14, 1935 , where he represented the Ontario constituency of Renfrew South for more than 21 years until his defeat in the June 10, 1957 election . During his membership in the House of Commons, he was between January 22, 1942 and January 31, 1945 chairman of the House of Commons special committee on broadcasting.

On April 18, 1945 McCann took over in the 16th cabinet of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King his first ministerial office and served until January 18, 1948 as Minister for National War Services. At the same time he became Minister for National Income on August 29, 1945 and held this ministerial office from November 15, 1948 to June 20, 1957 in the 17th Canadian cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent. In addition, between January 18 and December 12, 1950, he took over the office of Minister for Mining and Technical Assessment.
