James Kelly (politician, 1760)

James Kelly (born July 17, 1760 in York County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  February 4, 1819 in York , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1809 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Kelly received a classical school education and then studied until 1782 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . In 1782 and 1783 he was a member of the faculty of this university. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1785, he began to work in this profession in Philadelphia. Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s . Between 1793 and 1798 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania .

In the 1804 congressional election , Kelly was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Stewart on March 4, 1805 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1809 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Kelly returned to practice as a lawyer. He died in York on February 4, 1819.
