James Hingston Tuckey (sometimes also James Kingston Tuckey ; * August 1776 in Greenhill near Mallow , County Cork , Ireland, † October 4, 1816 in Muanda , Congo ) was a British naval officer and explorer.

Tuckey served as an officer in the Royal Navy in the Caribbean, India, and the Far East. In 1802 he was commissioned to help found the British colony of New South Wales . He explored the hinterland and measured the port of Port Philip . On the way back he was captured by the French. During his internment he wrote a book on oceanography. In 1815 he was appointed head of an Africa expedition to explore the area between the Congo and Niger . In 1816 he tried to take a steamboat up the Congo to the source. The expedition in which Tuckey and about half of his crew were killed failed, but his travelogue Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire encouraged interest in exploring Africa. He achieved the rank of commander in 1816 .
