His dissertation was entitled Honey bee communication: the dance-language controversy . Since then he has held a professorship in ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University . However, he became known for an experiment that he carried out while studying at the California Institute of Technology and for which he received the university's Green Memorial Award research prize in 1970 . This enabled him to prove that bees use dance to tell their fellow species where to find food. In addition to several textbooks published Gould and his wife the book The Honey Bee (dt .: The honeybee ).
