The Dongfeng Dam is an arch dam on the Wu Jiang , a tributary of the Yangtze , and is 65 km northwest of Qingzhen in the Chinese province of Guizhou . The main purpose of the dam is to generate electricity from hydropower ; a 570 MW power plant is used for this. Construction of the dam began in 1989. The first generator went into operation in 1994, the last in 1995. The generators were overhauled between 2004 and 2005, with their output increasing from 170 MW to 190 MW each. This means that 2420 GWh of energy can be produced per year .
Technical specifications
The Dongfeng dam is a 162 m high and 254 m long parabolically curved arch dam. Various sources also give their heights as 168 m and 173 m. It is 6 m wide at its crown and 25 m at its base. It stands at the end of a catchment area that is 1816 km² in size. The total storage space is 1025 million m³, of which 491 million m³ are usable space. With normal damming of 970 m above sea level, the reservoir contains 864 million m³.
There are several overflow and relief devices: three flood relief openings at the top of the wall with an output of 2565 m³ / s, three medium-high culverts, a weft channel on the left bank and a relief tunnel next to it. All openings, including the power plant drain, can collectively discharge 12,369 m³ / s.
The power plant is housed in a cavern on the right side of the dam. From the intake structure, the water flows through three pressure tunnels to three Francis turbines and generators with 190 MW each. Then the water is drained back into the river through another tunnel.
The hydraulic drop is a maximum of 132 m.
