The Wujiangdu Dam is a large dam in Guizhou Province , People's Republic of China . It is located north of Guiyang on the Wu Jiang , a tributary of the Yangtze .

Dam wall

The dam , an arch weight wall , was built in a karst area . It was completed in 1981 or 1983 - there are different statements about it. It is 165 meters high.

Reservoir

The reservoir has been dammed since 1979 . In the specialist literature it is reported that earthquakes were induced by the damming of the reservoir .

Hydroelectric power plant

The connected hydropower plant has five Francis turbines , three of them with 210  MW (according to other information 3 * 214) and two newer, retrofitted with 250 MW output each, a total of 1130 MW. It is operated by the China Huadian Group .

Dam accident

On May 1, 1989, there was an accident at this dam with 28 deaths.
