James Mitchel

James Mitchel ( James Sarsfield "Jim" Mitchel, real name Mitchell ; born January 30, 1864 in Emly , County Tipperary , † July 3, 1921 in New York City ) was an American track and field athlete of Irish descent.

Overall, he was nine times US champion in hammer throw (1889-1896, 1903) and eleven times in weight throwing (1888, 1891-1897, 1900, 1903, 1905). Before that he was three times British champion in hammer throw (1886-1888) and twice in the shot put (1886, 1887).

Mitchel was 40 years old when he first took part in the Olympic Games. In 1904 in St. Louis he won bronze in the weight throw. He was fifth in the hammer throw and sixth in the discus throw .

In the tug of war at the Games in St. Louis , he finished fourth with the New York Athletic Club .

He was also part of the US team for the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens, but injured himself on the voyage and had to forego a start.
