James Thomas Leach
James Thomas Leach (* 1805 in Cleveland , North Carolina , † March 28, 1883 in Johnston County , North Carolina) was an American doctor, plantation owner and politician . The Congressman James Madison Leach (1815-1891) was his cousin.
Career
James Thomas Leach, son of Susanna "Susan" Parham (1778-1839) and the farmer John Thomas Leach II (1778-1837), was born in Cleveland Township ( Johnston County ) approximately seven years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He had a younger sister: Susan Parham Leach (1810-1886). His paternal grandparents were Elizabeth Winnants and Dr. John Thomas Leach I. from Johnston County. Nothing is known about his youth. Leach, like his grandfather, became a doctor. In the following years he ran a practice and a large plantation in Johnston County. On July 21, 1833, at the age of 28, he married 18-year-old Elizabeth Willis Sanders (1815-1865) of the Sanders Grove Plantation, daughter of Colonel John Sanders, a wealthy plantation owner from Johnston County, and his second Wife Mary Boddie. The couple had at least ten children: Dr. John Sanders Leach (1833–1873), Elizabeth (* around 1835), James Thomas Leach junior (1839–1912), Mary E. (* around 1841), William (* around 1843), Nancy “Nannie” (* around 1847 ), Claudius (* around 1849), Sarah “Sallie” (1851–1881), Cornelia “Nellie” (1855–1887) and Ida (1857–1889). Leach also had a political career. He served in the North Carolina Senate from 1858 to 1859 . Although he opposed secession, he served in the Second Confederate Congress from 1864 to 1865 . After the end of the civil war , he denounced the prevailing conditions during the Reconstruction . Less than four months after North Carolina surrendered, his wife died in July 1865 after 32 years of marriage. Leach survived them by about 18 years.
