James Thompson Maffett

James Thompson Maffett (born February 2, 1837 in Clarion , Clarion County , Pennsylvania , †  December 19, 1912 there ) was an American politician . From 1887 to 1889 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Maffett attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Rimersburg Academy and Jefferson College in Canonsburg . He then taught for a year as a teacher in the state of Missouri . In 1859 he moved to Amador County in California , where he also worked as a teacher. There he later began to study law, which he continued on his return to Pennsylvania in 1870. After being admitted to the bar in 1872, he began working in this profession in his hometown of Clarion. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1884 he sought unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the congressional elections that year.

In the congressional elections of 1886 Maffett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 25th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Alexander Colwell White on March 4, 1887 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1888, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Maffett practiced law again. He died on December 19, 1912 in his hometown of Clarion, where he was also buried.
