James V. Remsen

James Vanderbeek "Van" Remsen junior (born September 21, 1949 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American ornithologist. His research focus is the neotropical avifauna .

Life

At the age of five, Remsen developed his passion for the outdoors and at eleven he was an avid bird watcher. In 1967 he made his high school Accounts at the Phillips Academy in Andover , Massachusetts . In the summer of 1968 he worked at the Denver Wildlife Research Center. In 1971 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in biology from Stanford University , where among others Harold A. Mooney , David F. DeSante and Paul R. Ehrlich were his mentors. In 1978 he received his Ph.D. under the direction of Frank A. Pitelka with his dissertation Geographical ecology of Neotropical Kingfishers. PhD in Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley . In the same year he became curator of the ornithological collection of the Natural History Museum of Louisiana State University .

In 1977, while studying at Berkeley, Remsen published an article in the American Birds journal entitled On taking field notes , which had a strong influence on many American bird watchers in the decades that followed.

To design a standardized classification and nomenclature of the neotropical avifauna, Remsen sent a proposal to the American Ornithologists' Union in 1997 to create a South American counterpart to the already well-known AOU Check-list Committee , which covers the avifauna of the western hemisphere from Panama and north to the Caribbean covers. In 1999, the proposal for the establishment of the South American Classification Committee (SACC) was approved and in October 2000 the first classification (via the splitting of the striped-necked pampa chicken ( Rhynchotus maculicollis ) from the red-winged pampa chicken ( Rhynchotus rufescens )) was available online.

In 2003 Remsen wrote the chapter on the family of the potter birds (Furnariidae) in the eighth volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World .

In 2005 Remsen co-authored a high-profile article in the journal Science announcing the rediscovery of the ivory woodpecker ( Campephilus principalis ).

Taxa described by Remsen

In 1981 he described a subspecies of the black-throated thistle tail ( Asthenes harterti bejaranoi ) for science.

In 1984 he published a new subspecies of the Marcapata tree slip ( Cranioleuca marcapatae ), which has had species status since 2016 and was given the common name Vilcabamba tree slip ( Cranioleuca weskei ).

In 1993 he described a new species with the Vilcabambabuschammer ( Atlapetes terborghi ).

In 1996 he and Orlando H. Garrido described the subspecies Margarops fuscatus klinikowskii of the pearl-eye mockingbird .

In 1998 he and Robb Thomas Brumfield were the first to describe the subspecies Cinnycerthia fulva gravesi and Cinnycerthia fulva fitzpatricki of the Sepia Wren .

Appreciations and dedication names

In 2013 Remsen was awarded the William Brewster Medal of the American Ornithologists' Union for his services to research into the South American avifauna . In 1994 the endangered chestnut belly kotinga ( Doliornis remseni ) from Colombia and Ecuador was named after Remsen. In 2017, the new genus name Remsenornis was proposed for the black- fronted tangerine ( Pipraeidea bonariensis ).
