Jan Tarnowski (* 1488 in Tarnow ; † 16th May 1561 in Wiewiórka , Little Poland ) was a Polish nobleman , officials in the civil service , hetman of the Polish Crown and Count of the Holy Roman Empire and founder of Tarnopol (now Ternopil in western Ukraine ) .

Life

Jan Amor Tarnowski became Voivode of Ruthenia Voivodeship on April 2, 1527 . Due to his vehement commitment to the Kingdom of Poland, he was enfeoffed with the offices of castellan from Krakow and Starosten from Sandomir .

He was victorious in 1531 in the Battle of Obertyn near the small town of Obertyn against an army of the Moldovans under the leadership of the Hospodar Petru Rareş . In the east he fought successfully against the Muscovite Empire . During the Lithuanian-Muscovite War 1534–1537, in which Poland also participated on the side of Lithuania, he was able to recapture the Sewerian cities of Homel and Starodub for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , which in 1503 went to Grand Duke Ivan III. had fallen.

Tarnowski founded the city of Tarnopol in 1540 as a Polish military base and fortress.
