Jan C. Schlegel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan C. Schlegel (* 1965 in the Black Forest ) is a German photographer .

Live and act

Schlegel became interested in photography at the age of 14. After his training and a seminar at the State School for Photography in Munich with Walter Schels , he discovered his love for black and white photography . Another mentor of Schlegel was the photographer Toni Schneiders , whose assistant he was two and a half years.

Since 1998 Schlegel has been traveling regularly to remote places cut off from the western world. On his travels, he portrays people who traditionally live in tribes and takes photographs of their habits. With this he creates artistic photographs and at the same time documents people's lives. With his art Schlegel advocates the particularity and individuality of cultures.

Schlegel's black-and-white photographs are taken with a large format camera (Ebony SV45 Ti 4x5 ', Linhof Master Technika 4x5', Chamonix 8x10 ') on traditional film. He completely dispenses with digital post-processing and develops his pictures himself. Schlegel tones by hand with his own mixture for his classic b / w recordings. The artist developed this personally over two years. The toning process takes several hours and always ends with a very individual result.

Many of his more recent series are made as platinum prints, a historical chemical photographic process that enables the greatest tonal reproduction of gray levels. The photographic emulsion is applied to high-quality cotton paper with a brush.

Schlegel became known for his comprehensive series "Essenz", which is shown at international art fairs and exhibitions and was published as a book by Seltmann + Söhne Verlag. The focus of his artistic work is the image of the person, especially the portrait. Schlegel does not work in individual images, but rather tries to express himself in series in order to inspire the viewer through his perspective.
