Jan Cornelisz Verspronck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck (born June 30, 1600 in Haarlem ; † 1662 ibid) was a Dutch portrait painter of the Baroque era in the so-called Golden Age of Dutch painting.

Life

Verspronck lived in Haarlem all his life . He was the son of the painter Cornelis Engelsz from Gouda , who introduced him to portraiture. From 1632 he became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke and began a successful career as a portraitist for the mostly Catholic residents of Haarlem. He was influenced by Frans Hals , which was evident in the peinture , the lively brushstrokes and the expressive and exuberant poses of his models. Its quality lay mainly in the precise representation of details such as jewels, fabrics and lace. This made it particularly popular with clients who wanted to have female models depicted. It is also noteworthy that he persuaded a commission to be allowed to portray a group of directors of a Haarlem charity in 1642. These women of the "Holy Geesthuis" were positioned at a table. This was a version that he rendered again in a similar fashion a year later.

According to Houbraken's biography, Verspronck was called "Gerard Sprong" and was the son of the painter Cornelis Engelsz.

Over 100 paintings by Verspronck are known. His girl in a blue dress adorned the banknote of the 25 guilders note from September 1945. Of this banknote, about 39 million were put into circulation until 1953 when new notes were issued. His portrait of the Amsterdam merchant Jean le Gouche (1634) came into the collection of Hermann Göring as looted art . The portrait was auctioned and moved to the Jacques Goudstikker collection ; today the whereabouts are unknown. In 1945 the portrait of a young woman burned in Berlin. This picture originally came from the Adolph Thiem collection .
