Jan František Beckovský (born August 18, 1658 in Havlíčkův Brod , † December 26, 1725 in Prague ) was a Czech writer , historian , translator and priest of the Order of Malta .

He attended high school in Deutschbrod and Brno . From 1680 he studied philosophy in Vienna . In 1688 he was ordained a priest. In the following years he managed the hospital at the Agnes Monastery in Prague.

Works

He wrote mostly in Czech , but also in Latin and German . He published the oldest surviving Bohemian herbarium . This consists of 117 leaves and around two hundred different dried plants, for which he also lists the German and Czech names in addition to the Latin names. However, there are a few mistakes in this book, a sign that he was just a hobby botanist . He translated about thirty works, mostly résumés of saints and ecclesiastical writings.

  • The Ambassador of Old Bohemian Events ( Poselkyně starých příběhův Českých ). The reason for writing this book were inaccuracies and mistakes in the chronicle of Václav Hájek z Libočan , which he corrected. The first part goes back to 1526, the second remained incomplete and was never published. The work is written in a procatholic and patriotic manner.
  • The sad turtledove , a prayer book, appeared in Prague under its German variant of the name Johannes Beczkowskij. It was the template for another prayer book with the title The sad turtle dove , sighing for her lover, expanded in the typical Baroque style , which was published several times in southern Germany.
