Johann Balzer

Johann Balzer (Czech Jan Balzer ; born August 6, 1738 in Kuks , Kingdom of Bohemia , † December 14, 1799 in Prague ) was a Bohemian engraver , draftsman and publisher .

Life

From 1750 to 1758 Balzer apprenticed to Michael Heinrich Rentz , who worked as a court engraver for Count Franz Anton von Sporck . After the death of his teacher, Balzer first went on a study trip to Germany and then settled in the residence of Count Sporck in Lissa on the Elbe . In 1771 Balzer moved to Prague, where he worked as a freelance engraver, draftsman and publisher until his death.

His two brothers, Georg Balzer ( Jiří Balzer ) and Matthias Balzer ( Matouš Balzer ), were engravers, and his son Anton ( Antonín Karel Balzer ) (1771–1807) worked as a landscape painter .

Services

Johann Balzer engraved portraits of contemporaries, including drawings by Johann Kleinhard and Johan Quirin Jahn , in copper.

About 50 copper engravings are known that he made based on the landscape drawings of his friend Norbert Grund . He also provided copperplate engravings for the works of the historian Josef Schallers ; "Topography of the Kingdom of Bohemia" and "Description of the capital Prague" as well as others for the periodical "Effigies virorum eruditorum atque artificium Bohemiae et Moraviae". He created vignettes for Nikolaus Adaukt Voigt's “Description of the previously known Bohemian coins in chronological order”.
