Nikolaus Adaukt Voigt

Nikolaus Adaukt Voigt , religious name Adauctus a Sancto Germano (Czech Mikuláš Adaukt Voigt ; born May 14, 1733 in Oberleutensdorf , † October 18, 1787 in Nikolsburg ) was a Bohemian piarist and scholar. He is considered to be the founder of scientific numismatics in Bohemia.

Life

Voigt grew up speaking German in Oberleutensdorf. In 1747 he entered the Piarist order in Slaný . During this time he also learned the Czech language. He then studied theology and philosophy at the Jesuit college in Komotau and at the Piarist college in Litomyšl . In 1758 he was ordained a priest in Olomouc .

He then worked in Kirchberg as a preacher and from 1760 as a teacher of poetry and rhetoric. In 1766 Voigt returned to Bohemia as a teacher of philosophy in Slaný. From 1769 he taught mathematics at the Piarist high school in Kosmonosy . In 1770 Gelasius Dobner appointed him to teach at the Piarist High School in Prague . There he was Dobner's deputy as Vice Rector from 1771. Voigt's scientific works were created in the context of the Catholic scholarly Enlightenment of Dobner. He cataloged the numismatic collection of the Bishop Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein , described the hoard of coins from Podmokl , the Bohemian coins in chronological order and under Maria Theresa coined Schau- and medals . He also wrote works on the Czech and Moravian literary and art history .

In 1777 Voigt accepted a call as a full professor of history at the University of Vienna , where he was also appointed curator of the coin collection of the court library . In 1784 Voigt resigned from his offices in Vienna for health reasons and moved to the Piarist monastery in Nikolsburg . The reason for this was also his disapproval of the Josephine reforms . Until his death, he worked as the librarian for Prince Dietrichstein in Nikolsburg.
