Jaroslaus Schaller

Josef Franz Jaroslaus Schaller (Czech Josef František Jaroslav Schaller ; born March 6, 1738 in Konopischt ( Konopiště ) near Beneschau ; † January 6, 1809 in Prague ) was a Bohemian piarist , historian and topographer .

Life

Jaroslaus Schaller entered the Piarist order in 1753, then completed a degree in theology , was also an elementary school teacher in Prague and Kosmanos and from 1766 to 1772 educator and teacher for the family of Franz Anton Nostitz-Rieneck . He then worked as a teacher of poetry and rhetoric in Niklasburg in South Moravia and was again tutor of the Nostitz family in Prague from 1775 until the end of his life. He maintained close relationships with Bohemian scholars of his time, including Franz Martin Pelzl , Josef Dobrovský and Gelasius Dobner .

Jaroslaus Schaller is the founder of geographical statistics in Bohemia . In his topographical studies, he used the statistical material collected by the authorities. His 16-volume Topography of Bohemia formed the basis of all subsequent specialist work of this type and is still an important historical source today.

As a priest he worked at the Church of St. Joseph in Prague and in the Piarist Order. In addition, he was archbishop notarius publicus, honorary member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin and the Leopoldina in Halle , as well as a real member of the "learned society" in Jena .
