Kuks (German Kukus ) is a municipality in Okres Trutnov in the Czech Republic . It is located on the upper reaches of the Elbe between the towns of Jaroměř and Dvůr Králové .

history

Kuks Castle and Spa at the beginning of the 18th century

Kuks, whose original name Kux was, has its origins in a gold - soap on the Elbe. After the discovery of mineral springs, the place developed into a fashionable bathing resort from the end of the 17th century. During a devastating flood of the Elbe in 1740 most of the spa buildings were flooded. Thereafter, the spa operation was discontinued and has never been resumed since.

Kuks became famous for the nature gallery Bethlehem ( Betlém ) near Stanovice u Kuksu and for a number of baroque art objects. Every year Kuks is visited by around 50,000 people. The Kuks Hospital is particularly worth seeing , the castle was demolished after 1900. The builder Franz Anton von Sporck had it built in 1707–1717 for veterans from the Turkish wars and old subjects. The architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi designed the church with its monumental facade. The stone carving was carried out by the court stone mason Giovanni Pietro della Torre . It was his last job; he died in 1711.
