Johann Jakob (Jan Jakub) Quirin Jahn (born June 4, 1739 in Prague ; † July 18, 1802 ibid) was a Bohemian draftsman, painter, theorist and historian of the visual arts.

Life

Quirin Jahn was a son of the painter Jacob Jahn (1706–1767), son of the monastery painter Heinrich Jahn (1672–1713) from Ossegg in North Bohemia and his wife Anna Maria Rauch from Graz . After attending the Piarist grammar school in Prague, he learned the art of drawing first from his father and later from the painters Johann Ferdinand Schor and František Xaver Palek . He continued his studies at the University of Vienna in 1761, of which he became an honorary member in 1767. Travel through Germany , the Netherlands and France followed . Since painting was going through a difficult time at the end of the 18th century (the baroque period came to an end, many religious orders were dissolved by Joseph II ), Jahn took over a cloth business in order to earn a living.
