Jan Johnson

Jan Johnson ( Jan Eric Johnson; born November 11, 1950 in Hammond ) is a former American pole vaulter .

In 1971 he won the Pan American Games in Cali with a height of 5.33 m in front of his compatriot David Roberts . The following year he qualified with his personal best of 5.50 m as third in the US eliminations for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. With a jumped height of 5.35 m, he won bronze behind Wolfgang Nordwig (5.50 m) and Bob Seagren (5.40 m).

In 1971 he became US champion, in 1970 starting NCAA champion for the University of Kansas and in 1972 starting NCAA indoor champion for the University of Alabama .

Jan Johnson is 1.80 m tall and weighed 70 kg during his playing days. After the end of his active career, he started working as a pole vault coach at the SkyJumper Vertical Sports Club in Atascadero . His most successful protégés include his daughter Chelsea , who won the silver medal at the 2009 World Athletics Championships , and Dean Starkey , bronze medalist at the 1997 World Athletics Championships .
