Jan Kubr (born August 6, 1934 in Krásný Dvůr , Czechoslovakia ; † February 10, 2017 ) was a Czech cyclist .

Life

Kubr's family moved from northern Bohemia to Milevsko in southern Bohemia in 1938 . His first trainer was the “bicycle baron” Christian Battaglia, famous in Czechoslovakia. As a member of the Spartak České Budějovice sports club, Jan Kubr made a name for himself as a sprinter and mountain specialist.

In 1953, as a member of the Czechoslovak national team, he took part in the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt for the first time , but retired early. At the end of the 1953 season he won the longest amateur race in Europe, Prague – Karlovy Vary – Prague. Kubr was nominated again for the peace run in 1954 and, as the second best of his team, was eighth overall. On his third Peace Tour in 1955, he achieved his only Peace Tour stage win on the second part of the day, and in the end he finished 21st. After Kubr had not taken part in the Peace Tour in 1956, he did it for the last time in 1957. After an operation he had not yet found his best form again and, like his team-mate Jan Veselý, had to give up on the 6th stage. According to the Czechoslovak Cycling Association, both had damaged the nation's reputation and were banned for an indefinite period. After two years in which he had worked as a messenger, Kubr was pardoned and was able to draw attention to himself again in 1959 with a victory in the road race Košice – Tatry – Košice.

Professional

After Kubr was diagnosed with lung disease at the end of 1965, the doctors forbade him from any sporting activity. He became a trainer at Roter Stern Plzeň and led Antonín Bartoníček to success. During the Prague Spring he made friends with Václav Havel and later emigrated to Germany. There he worked for a bicycle parts sales company in Stuttgart, for which he returned to the Czech Republic with a branch in the 1990s.
