Johannes "Jan" Alouisius Loeff (born November 15, 1858 in Baardwijk , Province of Noord-Brabant , † July 10, 1921 in The Hague ) was a Dutch lawyer and politician .

Life

Johannes "Jan" Alouisius Loeff worked as a lawyer in 's-Hertogenbosch and between December 21, 1893 and August 1, 1901 as a member of the town council of' s-Hertogenbosch.

The conservative, pragmatic Catholic Loeff became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) for the first time for the Rooms-Katholieke Bond van Kiesvereinigingen on May 5, 1896, and represented the constituency of 's-Hertogenbosch until August 1, 1901 .

On August 1, 1901, he was appointed Minister of Justice (Minister van Justitie) to the Kuyper cabinet , of which he was a member until August 17, 1905. In this capacity he presented a professional law and was against the criminalization of strikes in the public service in 1903 , but loyally defended the decision of the Council of Ministers .

After leaving the government, Loeff was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General on September 19, 1905 and represented the constituency of Waalwijk until June 27, 1917 . During this time he was between March 11, 1908 and December 21, 1909 chairman of the Catholic parliamentary group . He was again a member of the Second Chamber on September 18, 1917 , to which he now belonged for the Waalwijk constituency until January 14, 1920. Between 1918 and 1921 he also served as chairman of the advisory committee on questions of international law and from 1919 to 1921 as a member of the state commission for the revision of the Dutch Civil Code. By a royal decree of January 7, 1920 he finally became a member of the Council of State ( Raad van State ) and belonged to it from January 13, 1920 until his death on January 7, 1921.
