Jan Luiten van Zanden (born November 15, 1955 ) is a Dutch economic historian.

Van Zanden studied at the Free University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate there in 1985 on 19th century agricultural history in the Netherlands ( De economische ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse landbouw in de negentiende eeuw, 1800-1914 ). Since 2009 he has been professor of economic history at the University of Utrecht and since 2011 at the University of Groningen and Academy Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .

He dealt in particular with Dutch economic history of the modern era (particularly 19th and 20th centuries), but also of Indonesia, the history of Rabobank and Royal Dutch Shell .

In 2003 he received the Spinoza Prize . From 2009 he was President of the International Economic History Association and was President of the Organizing Committee of the 15th World Economic History Congress in Utrecht in 2009. In 2016 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
