Act

In 1921 Peutz published the first description of the polyposis, later referred to as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome , with hyperpigmentation of the lip and oral mucosa. He had noticed this hyperpigmentation in two adolescent patients in the course of 1920. It turned out to be brothers. The older brother had to undergo an operation due to an intestinal obstruction (ileus). Polyps with suspicious malignancy were found in the resected tissue . Other siblings were affected by hyperpigmentation and polyposis, and two siblings also had nasal polyps .

Other cases of the syndrome were described by Harold Jeghers and colleagues in 1949 . Peutz 'pupil van Wijk received his doctorate in 1950 with a doctorate on "Peutz disease", the term "Peutz-Jeghers syndrome" was introduced in 1954 by Bruwer.

The family of the cases presented in the first description ("Harrisburg family") remained under observation for subsequent generations.

Awards

Jan Peutz was awarded the Cross of Honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice , the Order of Gregorius (Commander) and the Order of Orange-Nassau (Officer).
