Harold Jeghers
Harold Joseph Jeghers (born September 26, 1904 in Jersey City , † September 21, 1990 ) was an American internist . He identified the later for him and January Peutz called Peutz-Jeghers syndrome , an autosomal dominant inherited polyposis with hyperpigmentation of the lip and oral mucosa.
Life
Jeghers earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1928 and a medical degree from Western Reserve University's medical school in Cleveland in 1932 . From 1933 he worked in various hospitals in Boston , from 1935 he also took on teaching activities at the Medical School of Boston University . Jeghers moved to Georgetown University in Washington, DC, as professor and clinical director in 1946 and to the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry (later The New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry ) in 1956 , where he retired in 1966. He then worked until 1974 as a professor at Tufts University and until 1978 as medical director of the St. Vincent Hospital in Worchester . During his career he also held other teaching positions, academic positions and management positions in various hospitals.
Jeghers was married to Isabel Jean Wile and had four children.
Act
The first description of the polyposis with hyperpigmentation of the lip and mouth mucosa, later called Peutz-Jeghers syndrome , was published by Jan Peutz in 1921. In a review article in 1949, Harold Jeghers, together with Victor McKusick and Kermit Katz, described ten further cases in different families and postulated an autosomal dominant inheritance . The term “Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome” was introduced in 1954 by Bruwer.
In the 1930s, Harold Jeghers began building a bibliography of medical publications that received over a million entries. After Jeghers death, the holdings of the Jeghers Medical Index (JMI) were partially digitized. The collection is held at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown , Ohio.
