Jan Polkowski

Jan Polkowski (born January 10, 1953 in Bierutów ) is a Polish poet and editor .

Life

Polkowski attended high school in Nowa Huta . After graduating from high school in 1972, he studied Polish studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . During his studies he was involved in the Solidarność student committee. He made his debut as a poet with poetry in Zapis magazine . In 1979 he married the archaeologist Anna Petrycka. With Tadeusz Nyczek and Andrzej Sulikowski , he founded the illegal publishing house Wydawnictwo ABC in Krakow in 1981, which was dissolved in December 1981 after the declaration of martial law. Since he was also committed to Solidarność, he was interned until July 1982. In the following years he published poems in magazines that were published outside the censorship, so in 1982 in Wezwanie , 1983 in Nowy Zapis , 1984 in Szkice , 1985 in Ogniwo , 1986 and 1987 in Arka and from 1982 to 1989 in Tygodnik Powszechny , 1984 in Powściągliwość i Praca and from 1984 to 1985 in the quarterly magazine Puls published in London . In addition, he worked from 1983 to 1990 as editor-in-chief of the magazine Arka , of which he was editor from 1983 to 1997. From 1990 to 1996 he was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Czas Krakowski . In 1992 he was briefly press spokesman for the Jan Olszewski cabinet . He made his debut as a novelist in 2013 with Ślady Krwi .

He lives in Krakow.
