Jan Portielje

Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (born April 20, 1829 in Amsterdam , † February 6, 1908 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch-Belgian portrait and genre painter.

Portielje was born as the tenth child (of eleven) to Gerrit Portielje, bookseller and publisher in Amsterdam, and Jacoba Zeegers. He studied from 1842 to 1849 at the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam) a . a. with Valentin Bing and Jan Braet von Überfeldt . Between 1851 and 1853 he stayed several times for longer periods in Paris , possibly during the summer months when the academy was closed for holidays. He also worked as a portraitist in Brussels and Antwerp.

After completing his studies, Portielje continued to live in Antwerp. In 1853 he married Eulalie Lemaire (Antwerp, 1828–1903) and became the father of Auguste (* 1854), Gerard (* 1856), Victor (* 1857), Edward (* 1861) and Hortence (* 1862). Gerard and Edward also became painters.

He mainly painted portraits and genre pictures depicting elegant women in the garden or in luxurious interiors. Some works showed an oriental milieu.

He painted some paintings together with other artists, such as Frans Lebret (1820–1909) and Eugène Rémy Maes (1849–1931).

Many of his works found sales in the United States .
