Jan Braet von Überfeldt , also in the spellings Ueberfeldt and Uberfeldt (born March 28, 1807 in Zevender near Schoonhoven , Kingdom of Holland ; † March 28, 1894 in Doetinchem , Achterhoek , province of Gelderland ), was a Dutch portrait and genre painter , lithographer and Draftsman .

Braet was the only son of Adam Rudolph Carl von Überfeldt (1778–1832), a captain of the Dutch infantry , and his wife Maria de Moor Braet (1778–1852), the youngest daughter of the bailiff Jan Braet (1722–1802) from Schoonhoven, Province of Zuid-Holland . He first studied medicine . Because of a mental illness, he turned to painting . He received artistic training from the Amsterdam history and portrait painter Jan Adam Kruseman (1804–1862). In 1836 he made his debut at an exhibition in Amsterdam. In 1842 he went on a study trip to Germany. He also visited Belgium. Überfeldt was friends with the genre painter Valentin Bing , with whom he published books, each of which was illustrated with numerous lithographs: in 1857 and 1859 two works on Dutch folklore and costumes , in 1863 and 1866 instructions on how to draw from nature in elementary schools. Überfeldt had several students. Around 1889 he was the teacher of the painter Piet Mondrian .
