Jan Stapiński (born December 21, 1867 in Budzyn, today the municipality of Haczów , Galicia , Austrian Empire , † February 17, 1946 in Krosno ) was a Polish journalist and politician . He was a member of the Austrian House of Representatives from 1898 to 1900 and from 1907 to 1918 .

education and profession

Stapiński attended elementary school in Kombornia (today Korczyna municipality ) and in Krosno and graduated from high school in Przemyśl and Sanok between 1880 and 1889 and in Jasło from 1885 and then studied law at the universities of Cracow and Lviv between 1890 and 1891 , but without one Degree to acquire.

Before his studies, Stapiński worked for a short time as deputy director of the Jasło branch of the Galician Farmers' Bank. He began his journalistic activities during his studies and after completing his studies in 1891 took up a job as a representative of the Concordia insurance company and an agricultural machine and fertilizer factory. In 1893 he became editor of the newspaper Kuryer Lwowski in Lemberg and worked for the newspaper Przyjaciel Ludu (People's Friend) as early as 1890 . In 1902 he took over the position of editor-in-chief there, and between 1903 and 1933 he was also the owner. At the same time he founded the newspaper Gazeta Powszechna in Cracow in 1908, where he also acted as publisher between 1908 and 1910. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Wisła insurance company and in 1934 moved to his Klimkowka estate in the Gorlice district.

Politics and functions

In 1898, Stapiński won the by-election in the electoral district of Galicia’s general electoral class No. 7, succeeding the late MP Wysocki. He was a member of the House of Representatives until 1900 and was a member of the Galician State Parliament from 1901 to 1914 . He was also a member of the House of Representatives for the electoral district of Galicia 50 from June 17, 1907 to November 12, 1918 . He was a founding member of the Polish People's Party from 1895 and was secretary of the party committee from 1900 and chairman from 1908. At times he was also the chairman of the Polish People's Party in the House of Representatives. After the First World War, he was a member of the Polish constituent Sejm from 1919 to 1922 and was a member of it from 1928 to 1930. He was also chairman of the Polish Farmers 'Union from 1924 to 1926 and deputy chairman of the Polish farmers' party from 1926 to 1927. During the Second World War, Stapiński had to go into hiding and went into hiding in the Krosno district .

Private

Stapiński was born the son of farmer Wojciech Stapiński. He married Barbara Rąp in 1894 and had two sons.
