Jan Verheyen (born July 9, 1944 in Hoogstraten , Antwerp Province ) is a former Belgian football player .

Career

society

Verheyen made his debut in 1961 at the age of 17 in the first team of Beerschot VAC . He soon became a regular player. In 1968 he was in the Belgian Cup final , which Beerschot lost to Club Bruges 6-7 on penalties . Verheyen missed the decisive ball. In 1971 he won the cup with a 2-1 victory over VV St. Truiden . In the same year Verheyen moved to RSC Anderlecht , with whom he was Belgian champion twice and cup winner three times . In 1975 he joined Royale Union Saint-Gilloise until he returned to his hometown club Hoogstraten VV in 1978 , where he ended his career in 1986.

National team

Verheyen completed a total of 33 games for the Belgian national team between 1965 and 1976 , in which he did not score. At the World Cup in Mexico in 1970 he was in the Belgian squad, but was not used in the course of the tournament. Two years later he played both finals at the 1972 European Championship in his own country in the semi-finals against the Federal Republic of Germany and in the game for third place against Hungary .

Jan Verheyen is the father of the former Belgian international Gert Verheyen .
