Jan Willem Sluiter
Jan Willem Sluiter (born May 24, 1873 in Amersfoort , † May 22, 1949 in The Hague ; also Willy Sluiter ) was a graphic artist and painter from the Netherlands .
Life
Sluiter was the son of a notary who had his office in Zwijndrecht . Willy Sluiter attended the Art Academy in Rotterdam from 1891 to 1894, and later studied at the Hague Art Academy. He lived u. a. in Scheveningen near The Hague, Volendam (1898–1909), Laren (1909–1916) and finally in The Hague. He was a member of several artists' associations, including Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Pulchri Studio (where he was chairman) in The Hague.
Works
Sluiter not only made paintings, but also lithographs , propaganda and advertising posters . He also designed book covers. His style was shaped , especially in his early works, by Impressionism and especially by his great role model Toulouse-Lautrec . He liked to paint fishermen and beach scenes, but also sketches from fashionable society.
An exhibition of his works was on view in the Katwijker Museum from October 1, 2013 to January 11, 2014.
