Jan Wolff

Jan Wolff (born September 21, 1941 in Amsterdam ; † August 22, 2012 ibid) was a Dutch musician ( horn player ) who did a great job as a music producer and manager in the field of new music in the Netherlands.

Live and act

Wolff studied horn at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam . At the age of 17 he became a member of the Dutch Opera Orchestra and then played as a horn player in the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble . Between 1969 and 1981 he was a member of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and was involved in numerous recordings. Since 1972 he was also one of the founding members of Orkest De Volharding , with whom he premiered works by Louis Andriessen , Diderik Wagenaar and Amílcar Vásques Días, among others . He was also a member of the Willem Breuker Kollektief between 1974 and 1979 ; he was also heard in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestras of the Dutch radio.

In 1979 Wolff founded the Amsterdam Center for Contemporary Music, De Ijsbreker (an old tavern converted into a concert hall), which he managed until 2005 and which he developed into the leading international performance venue for this genre. De Ijsbreker then merged into Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ , which was largely built on Wolff's instigation and opened in 2005 . From the time it opened until his retirement in 2008, Wolff was the musical director of the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ .

In memory of Wolff, Sylvia Maessen's composition Resilience was composed , which was premiered in 2013 by the Ensemble Barka .
