Jan Zahradník

Jan Zahradník (born March 23, 1949 in Budweis ) is a Czech politician . From December 2000 to November 2008 he was the first captain of the South Bohemian region .

Life

In 1972 he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University in Prague , between 1972 and 1992 he taught at the then Karel Šatal High School (now JV Jirsík High School) in České Budějovice, after which he continued his educational career as co-owner and until 2000 Director of the private Czech-English grammar school in České Budějovice.

Zahradník is married and has two daughters.

Political career

After the Velvet Revolution in 1989 , he was one of the founding members of the Citizens' Forum of Middle School Teachers in the South Bohemian Region. In 1990 he began his political career in the Chamber of Deputies of the city of České Budějovice. After the split in the Citizens' Forum , he joined the newly founded Civil Democratic Party (ODS) , for which he successfully ran in the local elections in České Budějovice in 1994, 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2006 (he always won the most votes).

In 2000 Jan Zahradník led the South Bohemian ODS to victory in the first district election and in December 2000 he became the historically first captain of the South Bohemian region. In the 2004 district elections, the ODS in South Bohemia under Zahradník managed to expand its position, it achieved 44 percent of the votes and Jan Zahradník was also elected captain of the South Bohemian region for the second electoral term . In the third district election in October 2008, the ODS led by Zahradník achieved 29.63% of the votes and thus lost to the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) . Zahradník renounced his participation in the coalition government negotiated between ČSSD and ODS, his successor in the office of South Bohemian captain was the former mayor of Nová Bystřice Jiří Zimola (* 1971).

In January 2009 Jan Zahradník became Vice Rector of the University of South Bohemia with responsibility for foreign relations. He is also the chairman of the Drei-Länder-Gesellschaft, whose aim is to support joint cross-border activities in the regions of South Bohemia , Upper Austria and Lower Bavaria .
