Jane Cronin Scanlon

Jane Smiley Cronin Scanlon (née Cronin; she also published as Jane Cronin; born July 17, 1922 in New York City , New York ; † June 19, 2018 in Piscataway , New Jersey ) was an American mathematician who worked with Differential equations and their applications in biology .

Scanlon first studied physics and received his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Michigan under Erich Rothe in 1949 ( Branch points of solutions of equations in Banach space , Transactions AMS, Volume 69, 1950). She then worked as a mathematician with the US Air Force and the American Optical Company and taught at schools (Wheaton College, Stonehill College). From 1957 she taught at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and from 1965 she was a professor at Rutgers University , where she retired in 1991.

In 1985 she was a Noether Lecturer .

Scanlon dealt in particular with qualitative and geometric theory of differential equations with applications, for example, to the equations of the conduction of nerve impulses ( Hodgkin-Huxley equations and others).

She was married and had four children.
