Janet Perlman
Janet Laurie Perlman (born September 19, 1954 in Montréal ) is a Canadian animator and author and illustrator of children's books. Recurring main characters in her works are penguins .
Life
Perlman studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts / School of Art and Design and joined the National Film Board of Canada in 1973 . She married animator Derek Lamb , who also worked at the NFB from 1975. Both had worked together for the first time in 1977 on the film The Hottest Show on Earth and left the NFB in 1982. Perlman's work at the NFB included the short animation film The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin , a variation of the fairy tale Cinderella with penguins as characters. The film received numerous international awards and was nominated in 1982 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”.
Perlman founded their own studio Lamb-Perlman Productions with Lamb in 1983. Her first co-produced work was the animation series Sports Cartoons , which ran on Canadian television in 1985 . Perlman has worked as an animator in numerous films by Derek Lambs, animated the Oscar-winning short film Bob's Birthday and created trick sequences for Sesame Street . She also worked as an illustrator and has published her own children's books. She filmed Penguins Behind Bars , which was created in collaboration with Derek Lamb, for television in 2003. The film was produced by the animation studio Hulascope, which she founded with the film composer Judith Gruber-Stitzer after her divorce from Lamb . The books Cinderella Penguin: Or, the Little Glass Flipper , The Emperor Penguin's New Clothes and The Penguin and the Pea are adaptations of well-known fairy tales, but with acting penguins.
