Jannis Sakellariou

Jannis Sakellariou ( Γιάννης Σακελλαρίου ) (born November 12, 1939 in Athens ; † October 23, 2019 in Brussels ) was a German member of the European Parliament ( SPD , SPE ).

After graduating from school in Athens in 1957, Sakellariou studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich ; he graduated with a degree in engineering. In addition to a postgraduate course in economics, he worked for Bayerische Elektrizitätswerke from 1966. After further employment in industry, he worked for the Max Planck Society and as academic director at the University of the Federal Armed Forces from 1975 to 1984.

Sakellariou was politically active from 1973 to 1974 as chairman of the Munich Jusos . From 1987 to 1991 he was a member of the board of the SPD South Bavaria and from 1993 to 1999 the board of the Bavarian SPD.

Since 1972 Sakellariou was a member of the trade union ÖTV (now United Services Union ).

Sakellariou was a member of the European Parliament from the second to the fifth electoral term in the years 1984 to 2004. He belonged to the Group of the Social Democratic Parties of Europe.

Sakellariou was the bearer of the Great Silver Medal of Honor with Star of the Republic of Austria, the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
