The Jantar ( Russian Янтарь for amber ) is a special ship of the Russian Northern Fleet .

The reconnaissance ship was built at the Jantar shipyard in Kaliningrad and put into service in 2015.

The Jantar can serve as a mother ship for two small submarines (one each for Project 16810 and Project 16811).

In March 2017, the ship hid secret equipment on board two crashed Russian fighter planes off the Syrian coast. From November 2017, it participated in the search for the missing Argentine submarine San Juan in the South Atlantic.

Unarmed reconnaissance ships of this class are referred to by the Russian Navy as OIS ( Russian океанографическое исследовательское судно , ie. "Oceanographic research ship").
